Washing Alimama Diapers

We recommend checking out Fluff Love University for useful laundering instructions and a cloth diaper safe detergent index. Tide original powder detergent gives excellent results  and is a top pick among cloth diapering families.

Washing instructions for your Alimama cloth diapers:

Wash your diapers every 2-3 days, if possible. Don’t soak them prior to wash. Spray/dump solids into toilet, squeeze out excess water (we suggest wearing gloves) and store diapers in a wetbag/pail until wash day. Keeping bag/pail ventilated reduces stink. Do not use scents or oils on your Alimama diapers.

Start with a cold speed wash, then run a warm or hot heavy wash (both cycles using detergent). The reason you should wash on two separate cycles is because during the first wash, pee is cleaned out, and in the second wash, diapers are actually getting cleaned with fresh water. Using too little detergent can lead to problems. Tumble dry on medium heat, or air dry flat or line dry by edges (not over elastics). Please do not use fabric softener or iron.

Diaper Rash

Here are some tips on healing a rash:

  1.  Baking soda in baby’s baths for a week or two can clear up mild bottom rash. Consult a doctor if your baby’s rash is very bad and not clearing up.
  2.  Use a natural (non-petroleum) bottom balm/cream after baths and messy diaper changes, to soothe your little one’s bottom. Be aware that diaper creams containing zinc can stain diapers and petroleum-based products inhibit absorption. Please avoid using these and baby powder/talc on your Alimama diapers. There are many cloth diaper safe bottom balms available. A few natural diaper balms we have tried and love are: Baby and Eve bum balm, Peas in a Pod bum balm, and Angel Baby bottom balm. All of these are smooth and easy to apply, help to heal and prevent rashes, and smell simple but delightful!
  3. If your doctor prescribes a cream that is not cloth diaper safe, you may choose to use liners inside the diaper, or the safest choice is to temporarily use disposable diapers with the medicated cream until the rash clears up.
